About BMP to JPG
BMP files are usually uncompressed, so a photo can be tens of megabytes. JPG cuts that down dramatically and is accepted by every website and phone.
A quality slider controls the size/quality trade-off (90% by default).
Metadata such as EXIF and GPS location is not copied, because the image is redrawn on a canvas.
